This category includes multipurpose solutions, sterile saline, enzyme products and eye drops. Each has a different purpose: a solution may clean, disinfect and store particular lenses, while saline is used only where instructions allow and does not replace disinfection. Eye drops are not all compatible with contact lenses either. Always read the label and follow the recommendation of your eye-care professional.

Cleaning, disinfection and storage

For reusable lenses, use a fresh quantity of suitable solution every time. Rub and rinse the lens when instructed, empty the case completely and never top up old liquid. The full disinfection time stated on the product is required. Shortening that period, decanting solution into another bottle or touching the nozzle against a surface can compromise hygiene.

Looking after the lens case

The case is part of the care system. Rub and rinse it with contact lens solution, allow it to air-dry upside down with the caps off and replace it according to professional guidance or sooner if damaged. Do not rinse it with water and do not store it closed while wet. A case that looks clean still needs replacement because microorganisms and biofilm may not be visible.

When sterile saline is used

Sterile saline may be used for rinsing in specific procedures, but it does not necessarily disinfect. Do not store lenses in saline when a disinfecting system is required and never make homemade salt water. Tap, bottled and distilled water are not suitable for contact lenses because they may contain microorganisms capable of causing serious corneal infection.

Eye drops and dryness

Dryness may be related to the environment, screen work, allergies, medication, the tear film or the fitting itself. Use only drops labelled as compatible with contact lenses and recommended for your situation. Drops should not be used to mask continuing pain or redness. Frequent need for relief calls for a review of the lens, wearing schedule and ocular surface.

Safe wear and everyday care

Contact lenses are medical devices and require an individual professional fitting. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before touching a lens, follow its replacement schedule and use only the care solution recommended for that material. Never rinse or store lenses in water, never top up old solution in the case and remove lenses before showering, swimming or using a hot tub. If you experience pain, marked redness, light sensitivity, discharge or a sudden change in vision, remove the lenses and contact an eye-care professional promptly.

Choosing the correct product

Take the lens packaging with you when requesting a new solution so that compatibility with the material and care system can be checked. Do not switch products simply because names or packaging look similar, and never use a solution past its expiry date or its permitted period after opening.
